PLOG (Plant Blog)
Xeric plants for the Dallas area
Agave Designs is named after a genus of plants found from the desert southwest down into Mexico. Agaves, Sotols, Nolinas, Yuccas, Hesperaloes and others in that fantastic family provide evergreen interest in the garden and especially so in the winter. Sculptural and architectural in their beauty, they compliment everything else growing in a Xeric garden. Bulbs naturalized in and among the rocks and gravel in a landscape play an additional part providing color and diversity at various times of the year.

This plant blog will attempt to provide some insights into what's happening with my plants & associated yard art at my house along with any new plantings. Last year I put together a series of newsletters which are located below in case you missed them. I've already ordered some rather interesting plants from http://www.plantdelights.com/ which seemed to get the new year off in the proper spirit as far as I was concerned. Every year I order plants from three or four places in hopes of finding something unusual/rare/weird that might fit my growing conditions and could add some new interest during different times of the year. Typically the survival rate can be as bad as about half. Plants always look so divinely desirable on the pages of the catalogue or web page but that long first year takes it's toll. It could be that before they can get established I forget to water them a week when we start hitting the century mark, I plant them in a perfect location but the slugs and snails like that place also, I plant them where they begin to get too much sun, water, not enough sun, squirrels find them amusing, they don't like our heat even though the catalog seemed to suggest they would, and on and on.... But for the ones that do survive each successive year makes them seem like an old friend when they bloom or spring back from the ground. Lets hope the 2010 year will bring us all a lot of fun and flowers.
